The Best Upgrade I Never Installed
I've been an avid Mac user since 1989. I have an eclectic mix of computers including a MacBook Pro laptop, a G5 Power Mac with a 2.7 dual processor, and a G4 machine we use for utility purposes. I purchased Snow Leopard shortly after release. Compared with what we pay for Windows upgrades, SL was a no brainer. I've yet to install the software. Here's why:
1. Installation on the MacBook would have disabled the Parallels software that permits use of Windows to run some software we use across both platforms. Upgrading would have required purchase of a later version of Parallels ($79.95 list) plus reinstallation of everything related. SL didn't offer enough advantages to warrant all that work and expense.
2. Snow Leopard installs only on Intel based Macs so my very useful G5 and the older G4 weren't candidates for the upgrade. The really bad news here? Those machines have seen their last operating system upgrades. Like Windows XP, it's only a matter of time before support diminishes for pre-SL operating systems. This is a tragedy for Mac owners because the market for pre-owned Mac equipment has always been so vibrant. Indeed, e-bay's Mac section usually offers hundreds of older Mac machines at very good prices. With millions of those Macs still in use the "Intel only" decision has disenfranchised those users. Ultimately, software makers will stop making versions for the older OS and forced obsolescense will render them useless.
For these reasons, Apple's release of Snow Leopard has changed the landscape for Mac owners in ways that are not inspiring. If there's a bright side to all this, owners of pre-SL OS versions suddenly have a valuable commodity. Like older Airport cards, prices should escalate with time.

Excellent upgrade that not only provided a slight speed boost but reclaimed space on my MacBook. Every OS X upgrade has been an improvement and this version is no exception, particularly for the price.
