Is a Mac Best for Me? Should I Get a Macmini, Imac, or Macbook?
Are you a Windows PC owner considering switching to a Mac? Let's consider a few reasons why you might want to choose a Mac over a Windows PC.
Naturally, there are advantages and disadvantages to choosing either of these two operating systems. Some computer geeks might even say to choose neither of these, but to choose Linux instead. Linux is arguably the most secure of the three operating systems; however, its commercial viability is where it really lacks. So let us focus first on a few reasons to choose a Mac over a PC.
Why to choose Mac over Windows PC:
-Macs are well-known for being far less susceptible to viruses, spyware and other malicious attacks. Since most computers are PCs, most viruses are written to target Windows based machines, not Macs.
-Macs are said to be more secure and work faster, even with the same processor and ram specs.
-Macs come with a robust set of free tools for graphic designers and audio/video professionals and are often more trusted by graphic designers and audio professionals. If you plan to do lots of work with audio, video, or graphics, you should seriously consider choosing a Mac.
-Macs are more likely to be easy to use for owners of other Mac products, such as the iPhone. If you own and use other Macintosh products, you'll probably find that they work better with other Mac products.
-Mac support of PC products and software is improving with time. For a long time, one of the big drawbacks to owning a Mac is that they were not compatible with lots of popular software. This is usually not the case anymore, though. Plus, most PC-only software has a Mac alternative that works as well or better than its PC counterpart.
-Macs dedicated, proprietary hardware is often of better appearance and quality than many PCs
-Mac owners benefit from a sense of pride in the Mac community
What Mac options can I choose from?
The macMini is a mini desktop computer intended to help you enjoy your music, photos and media more. The Mac Mini is amazingly small - just 6.5 inches square and 2 inches tall. The MacMini is particularly well suited for use as part of a home entertainment system.
The Apple iMac is a line of desktop computers that has been a top seller since Apple first started selling it in 1998. The current model of iMac is a compact, all-in-one desktop that hardly takes up any space at all. The entire computer is enclosed in what looks like a normal LCD display.
Of course, we can't forget the Apple Macbook, Mac's new laptop. Well, new is a relative term, I suppose - the Macbook was introduced in 2006, replacing the iBook G4.
Why to choose Windows PC over Mac:
For some people, though, a Mac may NOT be the best option. There are good reasons to choose a PC...here are a few:
-More software is compatible with PC than Mac (check to see if your favorite software is Mac-compatible)
-PCs are now said to be competitive in performance, even for graphics and audio/video
-The learning curve is said to be easier on a PC, as its layout is said to make more sense to average users
-Due to popularity, PC support/repair is easier to get than Mac support/repair, in case of problems or issues
-PCs are still compatible with iTunes and iPhones, and the support is getting better with time
-If a friend visits and uses your computer, they are more likely to feel at home on a Windows machine
-If someone sends you a file, such as a document, it is more likely to be a Windows-based file
-Macs have more issues with overuse of things like copy protection, DRM and so on
-Mac users are somewhat isolated from both the tech community and among general computer users
What are my PC options?
Many different companies make a wide variety of PCs for you to choose from, so there is no lack of selection. Dell, HP, and Toshiba are several of the best selling PC brands.
So, which operating system is best? In a perfect world, maybe Linux would be a commercial product, and all of the operating systems would join forces and simplify our options. There is no such thing as a perfectly compatible, perfectly functional, perfectly supported, or perfectly virus-free operating system, though. Options are a good thing. Use the criteria most important to you, consider wisely, and make the decision that works best for your situation.
